ANZAC Day fell on Saturday (two days ago) this year, and today we observe a public holiday in commemoration of all Australians who served in wartime. The State War Memorial in King’s Park is a well known location in Perth, and a beautiful place to visit. You’ll find memorials of a similar nature, if not on the same scale, throughout most towns in Western Australia.

I entered the photograph above in a competition run by The West Australian in 2008. It appeared (uncredited) as part of a montage within a travel article in that newspaper some years later. I remember that it was a pleasantly cool autumn evening. The city lights were becoming more prominent, and the fading sunlight painted the sky in subtle shades of purple and blue. It was a tranquil scene, and surely a contrast to the noise, chaos, blood, and dust of war.
Lest we forget.
