First Tae Kwon Do held a special grading examination in Perth recently, with one candidate undergoing the test for 1st Dan black belt. Following a rigorous programme of breaking, sparring, patterns, and self-defence techniques, she was promoted by Master Vernon Low.

For the photographs above, I shot with my Nikon D700 and Nikkor 70–200 mm f/2.8 zoom lens. The lighting in the gymnasium was decent, otherwise I would have brought my Nikkor 85 mm f/1.4 prime lens instead. I was shooting at ISO 1600 with VR switched off.

The event was also an opportunity for Master Low, Chief Instructor John O’Brien, Chief Instructor WA Dane Meade, and WA instructors and black belt members to have a group portrait taken. For this picture, I used my Nikon D70S with its standard 18–70 mm f/3.5–4.5 zoom lens.
